ARMISTICE AND REMEMBRANCE

1918–2008: Ninety Years of Remembrance
8 November
10.00am – 6.00pm

Special family remembrance events as part of the BBC Learning campaign to commemorate the ninetieth anniversary of the Armistice. Throughout the day, visitors can upload personal First World War memorabilia to the BBC online remembrance wall, make their own poppy of remembrance and experience what life was like during the war years by meeting characters from the past.

Remembrance Ceremony

A remembrance ceremony will be held in the Museum’s atrium with The Last Post sounded by a Sea Cadet, followed by a two-minute silence. There will then be a recital on the Western Front Violin.

Peace Lecture – Hope in a Time of War: a Religious Perspective on Peacemaking

Reverend Kathy Galloway, leader of the Iona Community, will give the annual Peace Lecture, organised by the Movement for the Abolition of War.

Armistice Ceremony
Tuesday 11 November
11.00am
Exactly 90 years on from the moment the First World War ended, the memorial ceremony in the Museum’s atrium will begin with The Last Post, sounded by a member of the Band of The Brigade of Gukhas, and a two-minute silence. It will be followed by a performance by Portsmouth Grammar School Chamber Choir of Douglas Guest's choral setting of Laurence Binyon's poem 'For the Fallen'.

Make and dedicate your own remembrance poppy.

Mud, Blood and Poppycock

11.00am – 12.30pm, 1.30pm – 4.00pm

Talk to historians about artefacts from the Museum’s Collections and find out about the myths and realities of the First World War. 

Voices:  Ordinary People, Extraordinary Times
29, 30 November
1.00pm

Meet veterans from the Second World War or more recent conflicts and learn about their experiences.

Graphotism
29, 30 November
1.00pm – 5.00pm

Use ideas from graffiti as a way of exploring the contemporary issue of gun crime.

Admission to all family events and activities is free.  All children must be accompanied by an adult.

Unspeakable: The Artist as Witness to the Holocaust

Noon, 3.00pm

Gallery talks exploring the different ways artists have tried to come to terms with the Holocaust – a difficult and in many ways unspeakable episode in twentieth century history. The exhibition looks at works by official war artists, contemporary artists and Holocaust survivors.

The Caribbean and the USA
23 November
1.00pm – 4.30pm Museum Conference Room

A series of free monthly talks linked to the From War to Windrush exhibition. This lecture will focus on the American presence in the Caribbean from the First World War through to the Second World War and the influence of US segregation policies on Britain. It will examine the differences between American racism and British racism, look at the bases-for-warships exchange between the US and Britain during the Second World War, and discuss the long-term impact of American culture in the Caribbean. Films will include The Other American Invasion and Life and Debt.

Lost in the Field of Blackbirds

A drama based on the real-life testimonies of those who lived through the Balkans War of the early 1990s. Written and performed by actors from Spectrum Drama and generously supported by the Their Past Your Future grant programme, MLA and Big Lottery Fund.
Admission free. Suitable for an audience aged 14 years and above.

The Battle of the Somme

Public screening of the silent film The Battle of the Somme in the Museum Cinema. Accompanied by a live performance of the 1916 Morton Hutcheson medley, a selection of some 34 pieces of music which were recommended to be played alongside the film when it was in distribution in 1916.

Public screening of the silent film The Battle of the Somme in the Museum Cinema.  Accompanied by the recorded orchestral score specially composed for the remastered film by Laura Rossi and performed by the Philharmonia Orchestra.

Student Documentary Master Class

To coincide with the Eighth Imperial War Museum Student Film Festival, Imperial War Museum London is hosting a one-day workshop where established professionals from the worlds of moving image archives, film and television will advise students on the production of historical documentaries.
