Paths to Freedom: Behind the Iron Curtain is the second part of a special season of free film shows covering the history of Poland from September 1939 to the present. The section covered this Spring, depicts Poland from the formation of the communist system after the Second World War, through to the years of Stalin and on to 1970 when the regime sent the army against the striking workers in Gdansk. The films presented here portray the Cold War from the perspective of a people who were living right at the heart of that experience. The season is a collaborative project between the Imperial War Museum, the Polish History Museum in Warsaw, and Filmoteka Narodowa, and comprises an exciting array of subtitled Polish features and documentaries, many of which have not been seen in the UK. The Imperial War Museum is contributing a large number of titles from its own collection, ranging from newsreels released at the end of the Second World War and the beginning of the period of the reconstruction of Poland's battered cities, to documentaries produced by filmmakers (many of them Polish exiles) and made in the intervening years of Poland's isolation.
