The Imperial War Graves Commission was established on 21 May 1917, to build and maintain the cemeteries and memorials for those who fell in the First World War [their dates of coverage are 4 August 1914 to 31 August 1921]. It was led by Fabian Ware who had gone to France with the British Red Cross Society, and set up the Graves Registration Unit in1915. Early on in the war the decision was taken that no bodies were to be repatriated to Great Britain, and the standard headstones and designs were testimony to the principle of equality in death. Their remit was extended to the Second World War [3 September 1939-31 December 1947]. In 1960 a name change to the Commonwealth War Graves Commission took place.
