Situated in the Pas-de-Calais, 5 km from the town of Saint-Omer, LA COUPOLE is a gigantic underground bunker designed by the Nazis, in 1943-1944, to store, prepare and launch the V2 rockets (first missiles to reach the stratosphere), the secret weapon that Hitler was counting on to destroy London and reverse the course of the war. Celebrating over one hundred years of army aviation, this award-winning museum is home to one of the country’s finest historical collections of military kites, gliders, aeroplanes and helicopters. RAF Museum Hendon is Britain's only national air museum dedicated to aviation and has a total collection of well over two hundred aircraft; over a hundred full-size aircraft from all over the world are displayed under cover on the historic site of the original London Aerodrome. The Museum was opened in 1982 with exhibits depicting 70 years of military aviation in Sussex, with special emphasis on the RAF at Tangmere and the air war over southern England from 1939 to 1945. The Air League has been in existence since 1909, promoting the cause of British aviation. It promotes young people in aviation and offers scholarships and bursaries for avaiation-related aviation activities. |
