Regular Sessions for KS1
Shoes, Satchels and Jackets
How do children’s clothes and belongings from the 1940s compare with what children wear and use today? Children will find out about the similarities and differences through discussion, object handling and observational drawing.
The session can be adapted to the needs of your class. If you would like a wartime context to be introduced, the following activities can be incorporated into the session:
- Investigating an evacuee’s suitcase
- Listening to wartime sounds – air raid siren, gas rattle and bell
- Handling different types of gas masks

Toys From Tins
This session presents an opportunity for children to investigate original and replica toys and games from the 1940s. Your class will be encouraged to think about the materials the toys are made from, how they work and how different they are from toys today. We will also look at Make Do and Mend toys, and children will make a simple toy to take away with them.

Children will also examine a wartime model house to think about how similar or different it is to a home today. They will also be encouraged to identify what each room was used for and to talk about what household objects they recognise.
