Interdisciplinary and whole-school approaches to teaching and learning greatly enrich young people’s understanding of the Holocaust. Schools are increasingly taking a whole-school approach to Holocaust Memorial Day, with a full day of cross-curricular lessons and activities.
To encourage a co-ordinated, whole-school approach we offer free one-day programmes at the Museum, focusing on how different National Curriculum subjects can effectively contribute to young people’s understanding of the Holocaust and help them to find meaning in this history for their lives today. The content can be tailored to your school's particular needs, but a typical INSET programme might include:
- A rationale for a cross curricular approach to teaching the Holocaust
- Highlighting key links to the National Curriculum
- Workshops modelling practical classroom activities
- Discussion of how best to co-ordinate a whole-school approach
- A visit to the Holocaust Exhibition
- Lesson ideas and resources
If you would like to discuss setting up a whole school INSET, please contact Paul Salmons psalmons@iwm.org.uk
The day is free of charge. Refreshments can be purchased through the museum caterers, if required.
