Beasts of Burden

Throughout history, millions of animals have played a crucial role in carrying troops, equipment and supplies.

A variety of creatures including horses, mules, donkeys, camels, elephants, oxen, reindeer and dogs have all been pressed into service.

By the end of the First World War there were over 828,000 horses, mules, camels, donkeys and oxen serving with British forces.

Despite the development of motor vehicles, horses and mules were still needed to carry supplies and ammunition to remote and inaccessible areas during the Second World War.

Today the British Army still has one mule, Alfie, on its strength.
